APPROXIMATELY 65% of the province’s dryland hectares could not be planted, according to the Free State MEC for Agriculture, Oupa Khoabane.

Khoabane said the drought had resulted in a production input loss of about R450 million.

He was tabling his budget vote in Harrismith recently.

Although the MEC had no budget allocations for drought relief, he said that nearly 4 000 livestock units had died since 26 January, with tens of thousands more sold Z at a loss Z by farmers.

The total budget allocation for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is R745 825 million for the 2016-’17 financial year.

In the Free State there were almost 600 000 people from the total population of 2,7 million who were still experiencing inadequate access to food, the MEC said.

Khoabane said the department was currently running food security programmes such as the Hlasela Tlala ka Diratswana, which provided food to 134 625 households across the province.

The MEC said the Xhariep fish and ostrich hubs would get R21,6 million to complete the fish processing plant at Bethulie and to support the six fish production farms.

“We will also complete the ostrich feed processing plant at Koffiefontein to maximise production of our ostrich projects,” said Khoabane.

About R22 million has been allocated to enhance the livestock value chain within the Mangaung Metro and nearly R20 million will be injected to expand the piggery project at Brandfort.

The department’s operational and administrative budget is set for an estimated R260 million.
