THE Tjhabelang Primary School has shown that poverty is not be an insurmountable barrier to lifelong progress and achievement.

Through its amazing work of teaching future generations in the farming community, this institution is living proof of changing lives and the heartbeat of the farming community.

Located in the heart of the farming community of Bainsvlei, Bloemfontein, the school’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre has scooped a prestigious award as the best ECD Centre of 2015. The awards ceremony was held in Cape Town on Thursday, 5 May. The centre was nominated in the final round out of the 286 other development centres in the Free State.

Suné van der Merwe, principal of the Tjhabelang ECD Centre, believes the award was a worthy recognition for the dedicated staff who work hard in the foundation phase to ensure the children get a good foundation.

“This is the best thing to happen to us. We work and do everything as a happy team. We have worked hard to change their lives and teach lifelong basics. Everyone has passion for their work,” said Van der Merwe. She said the centre was thriving, because the teachers were qualified in teaching children in the foundation phase.

Van der Merwe believes the school provides the children with the opportunity to enjoy an above-average educational experience at a fraction of the cost of similar schooling in town. The staff’s holistic approach to education attends to learners’ academic, physical and social needs, “thereby opening the minds to the possibility that life offers unlimited opportunities,” she said.

The Tjhabelang Primary School is fully dependent on the generosity of donors to finance its operations and continues to provide children with lifelong education.
