Interstate Bus Lines (IBL), together with the Road Accident Fund (RAF), have made a commitment to assisting the bereaved families of the eight people who died due to the accident on the N8 while they were passengers on the IBL bus.

Six of the deceased were reportedly killed instantly when the bus rear-ended with a stationary truck, and the other two passed away in hospital.

The horrific accident occured on Monday (03/07) at approximately 06:00 near the Mandela View settlement, 20 km outside Bloemfontein.

The tragic crash left 51 people with severe injuries

All of the 83 survivors were treated at the Pelonomi Hospital, the National Hospital in Bloemfontein and the Botshabelo Hospital, how-ever, two of them passed away in hospital due to their injuries.

Lepele says the 32 passengers who were not injured, were safely transported to their work destination after being assessed by paramedics.

The 114 seater bus carrying 89 passengers was on its way from Botshabelo, Section W, heading to Bloemfontein’s Central Park.

Thando Lepele, IBL spokesperson, and Phumelela Dhlomo, RAF chief marketing officer, say the deceaseds’ families will be assisted with making insurance claims from the RAF.

Dhlomo says the agency representative in Bloemfontein has started engaging with the grief-stricken families on Monday to facilitate funeral arrangements and advise them about the RAF’s services.

“After the funerals, consultations will continue with the families to originate claims for loss of support for any dependants and qualifying heads of damages for the injured as stipulated in the RAF Act,” says Dhlomo.

Lepele says the company’s accident team started an investigation into the cause of the accident, and says IBL apologises to their commuters and other road users for the accident.

  • “We wish to assure our commuters that we prioritise their safety at all times.” The names of the deceased have not been released at the time of going to print.
