THE National Museum in Bloemfontein will celebrate International Museum Day on Wednesday, 18 May, hosting free tours for the public.

The tours celebrate the work of museum professionals. The National Museum will open the Cultural History, the Anthropology Collections and the Palaeontology Laboratory to the public.

“The objective of this day is to raise awareness of the importance of museum collections and the research based on these collections. The Cultural History Collection portrays mainly the history of the Free State.

“Although there is material dating back to the 17th century, the major part of the collection consists of material from the 19th century,” said Dr Louise Coetzee of the National Museum.

Members of the public can arrange for a two-hour tour on 18 May.

The two-hour tour starts at 14:30. Entrance is free and the public is requested to make bookings for tours. Phone 051-447-9609 or send an e-mail to shop@nasmus.co.za.
