Staying fit and in shape takes time and hard work. However, with body builder Keamogetsoe Monare (28), it is a totally different story, as he has been doing it for years now. He said he enjoys bodybuilding as a growing sport.

He keeps in shape at Shadow Gathering Gym, a small gym he has set up in the back yard of his parents’ house at 6145 Motsamai Street in Rocklands, Bloemfontein. He lives with his mother and sister, Motshelisi (55) and Tshiamo (25).

Keamogetsoe says he started his small weightlifting gym six years ago with the intention of becoming a professional bodybuilder.

He persevered and later became an inspiration to other locals, especially young men and women who wanted a place nearby where they could keep their bodies in shape. He says that for more and more young people joined his gym. The backyard gym now has 20 registered members.

When asked about the idea of opening a gym, Keamogetsoe says that Shadow Gathering was never meant to be a place where anyone could do weightlifting, but because of the interest shown by locals, he decided to open its doors for everyone. “The gym has helped me grow and make a change within my community.”

Keamogetsoe says his good relationships with his fellow members keeps the gym going.

“We help one another to stay in good shape with the different exercises we do together in rotation. I try by all means to encourage them to look after the equipment to ensure the gym is effective,” he said.

The gym is open from 05:00 until 21:00 to enable members to work out according to their individual schedule. The gym has equipment ranging from a bench press, a bicycle, a sit-up bench, a track and barbells.

Having all of this equipment in a mini-gym in the backyard is fascinating, as it helped Keamogetsoe to achieve first place at the Free State Fitness Model championship in 2015.

He went on to qualify for the nationals held in Bloemfontein in the same year, taking fourth place.

He also qualified for the World Fitness Federation (WFF) held in Pretoria in 2015, taking 5th position.

Keamogetsoe is now preparing for the National Amateur Bodybuilding Association championship set to take place during this year’s BloemShow from the end of April until the middle of May.

Keamogetsoe presently weighs 65 kg with a height of 1,65 m.

He works out twice a day, at 11:00 and midnight.
