Flower power on show

2016-10-26 06:00

The beauty of nature will be on display during the Free State Flower Festival, showcasing unique fynbos flower species found in the Free State and elsewhere in the country.

It will be held over two days (11 and 12 November) in Parys and is expected to attract many tourists.

Some of the attractions include 500 performers, five massive floats and fireworks, as well as a floral storytelling precinct.

The event is a joint initiative between the Free State government and the government of Madeira, the Portuguese island which hosts the world’s largest flower festival every April.

The festival has three key components.

The first is Flower Forum, a gathering of leading local and international experts from the flower industry incorporating presentations on local, national and world trends. Speakers will include botanists, floriculturists, horticulturists, farmers, retailers and wholesalers. A key theme of the forum will be the unlocking of flower export opportunities.

Flower Parade is the tourism highlight of the event and will see an extravaganza of approximately 500 choreographed performers, adorned in flowers and floral outfits.

Flower Precinct will be an exhibition area of the diverse floral entrepreneurs, ranging from wholesalers and retailers to food and beverage providers. Among the highlights will be aerobatics, musical performances and various floral competitions.
