Fraud case continues

2017-07-19 06:00

An employee of the Free State Department of Public Works, arrested in connection with fraud, is set to reappear in the Bloemfontein Commercial Crimes Court on Friday (21/07). The suspect, Leboea Sydney Molati, first appeared in court last Friday (14/07) following his arrest by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).

Capt. Sifiso Nyakane, Hawks spokesperson, says the trial has been postponed to the new date for bail application.

He says the elite crime-fighting unit arrested Molati (36) last Wednesday (12/07) in Ficksburg after resurfacing from hiding. Nyakane says the suspect faces charges relating to alleged fraud and corruption.

“The suspect disappeared after hearing that he was wanted by the police. It was suspected that he had fled to Lesotho. After an intelligence search, the man was arrested in Ficksburg after crossing the border from Lesotho into South Africa,” says Nyakane. Upon the arrest, four cellphones, a passport and a vehicle were seized from the suspect.

Nyakane says Molati had allegedly colluded with a service provider to defraud the department of a large sum of money through a tender. He says it was worth R1,4 million.

Nyakane says the alleged fraud was done through the submission of fraudulent payment claims for a tender which was awarded to the service provider to render service at power stations at prisons. He says Molati had been stationed at the provincial department’s regional office in Bloemfontein.
