Gallery invites community

2016-08-17 06:00

THE WHAG (William Humphreys Art Gallery) is hosting several community-based events to expose the public to art. They currently have an outreach programme that is sponsored by MTN in which they visit schools with artwork and undertake practical workshops with the learners. A programme for female prisoners is also done once a week, in which inmates are exposed to handcrafts. “Kea Dumela” is also offered there, in which crèche children visit the gallery every weekday morning at no charge.

A watercolor workshop will be held during the Gariep Arts Festival on 3 September at R60 per person. Jody Olen, an illustrator, and Corinne Erasmus, an emerging artist from Kimberley, will be exhibiting their work during the programme.

“Artworks belong to the community,” mused Kirsten Hartley, a facilitator at the gallery. “The gallery wants to allow members of the public to understand that the gallery is theirs and to nurture a love of art amongst the youth.”

Members of the community are encouraged to join the “friends of the library” membership, which grants access to information on the various activities at the gallery. For those who cannot afford the membership fee, a Facebook page is available with any WHAG-related information.

A free pottery class for children will take place this Saturday morning (13/08). For more information, contact Kekeletso on 072-836-1770 or Hartley on 053-831-1724/5.
