Giants fight for survival

2017-02-22 06:03

The two Free State football giants Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars still have must-win games to play to survive the big drop from the Premier Soccer League.

They intensified their chances of surviving relegation by recording much-needed wins against Lamontville Golden Arrows and Chippa United.

Phunya Sele Sele hammered Chippa 2-0 on Sunday (19/02) in a fixture played at the Dr R.P. Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein, while Ea Lla Koto overcame Arrows 0-1 in an encounter played on Saturday (18/02) in Durban.

The win against Arrows was a first for Ea Lla Koto’s current coach Serame Letsoaka, who also had a brief stint with the Durban-based outfit.

Inspired by wins, the two local sides hope to consolidate their respective positions in forthcoming league encounters against Platinum Stars and Maritzburg United. Celtic welcomes equally struggling Stars at home on Saturday, while Ea Lla Koto will travel to Pietermaritzburg to face off against United on Sunday.

The four clubs fighting to avoid the dreaded relegation are just two points apart from each other on the log table. Celtic and Ea Lla Koto have 18 points each and United 20 points, while Platinum Stars have 16.

The kick-offs are set for 15:30.
