The Coal to Diamonds Foundation, exclusively made up of women, has given hope to 60 less fortunate learners of four schools in Bloemfontein by donating brand-new uniforms and shoes.

The recipients attend the Tsoseletso Secondary School, the Petunia Secondary School, the Bloemfontein East Intermediate School and the Matla Primary School. The foundation selected 15 beneficiaries from each school.

The members wrapped up the drive last Wednesday (01/03) with a presentation to learners at the Matla Primary School in Phase 6.

“It is through this combined effort that as a foundation we continue to be a valuable resource to children from less fortunate backgrounds and those who are vulnerable,” said Betso Ditira, member of the foundation.

She said although members contributed towards the initiative, the foundation depended mainly on the support of external donors who had contributed to make the initiative a great success over the years.

The members of the foundation purchased uniforms for five out of 15 children from each school themselves. The uniform for the ten other children came from the people or donors approached for assistance.

“We donate to children based on their conditions and as per advice from the schools.

“We also donate uniforms during winter and essential items during the festive period.”

She said surplus was donated to other learners in a similar situation.

Mmakweleng Mokhethi, teacher and also of the school-based support team, said the donation had come handy to relieve scores of children with in distress, having to go to school without shoes, or with worn-out shoes.

“Some of the learners are orphans, some of their parents are unemployed while others are cared for by their grandparents, who are equally struggling to make ends meet,” said Mokhethi.

“The situation is dire for most of the learners.”
