BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC have entrusted their long serving goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb with the captaincy to lead the club in search for glory in the new season of 2016-’17.

This is the Cameroonian’s ninth season with Phunya Sele Sele and he said in an interview on Monday (22/08), during the club’s unveiling of 15 new players and their new jersey, that he is humbled to lead a team with a demanding support base.

Although Tignyemb has had the privilege of standing in as captain, he was taken by surprise by the decision after having been overlooked in the past three seasons.

Even when ex-skipper Thabo Nthethe left for Mamelodi Sundowns, the keeper did not get the nod to lead Celtic.

Tignyemb has commited to doing his best, starting with today’s opening fixture against Maritzburg United at the Dr R.T. Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.

The kick-off is at 19:30. “This is a motivation to continue doing what I have been tasked to do. It is a new challenge to lead the whole team, not only from the goal posts.

“I’m happy to be the leader of the team and this is a recognition I get for loving my job. It is very rare that a keeper is entrusted with captaincy. I think being the longest-serving player is recognition for my loyalty to the team, having been here for nine seasons,” said Tignyemb.
