Kovsies likely to lift trophy

2016-04-27 06:00

A GUARD of honour awaits the University of the Free State’s (UFS) Kovsies men’s side as the new champions of the Mangaung South African Football Association (Safa) Regio-nal League. Their superior goal difference of 18 handed them the 2015-’16 title. The irony of this is that Kovsies’ arch-rivals, Kingston, made it possible when they drew 2-all with Mo-theo FET College at the fixture.

This was a must-win game for Kingston and victory would have given them a chance to lift the trophy via points.

With a win, Kingston could now have had 50, hoping to win two matches X one against Kovsies and the other against Turf Flowers on Saturday (30/04).

On the other hand, Kingston would have hoped that Kovsies lose the other match against Celtic All Stars on Saturday.

Positive results would see Kingston finish on 56 points, to lift the trophy on points, while negative outcomes in both matches will see Kovsies end with 54 points.

Kingston’s 2-all with Motheo dealt them a major blow, benefitting Kovsies.

What the Kingston-Motheo result means for Kovsies is that even if they lose against Kingston on Wednesday (27/04) and to Celtic All Stars in the final encounter, they will still be crowned champions because of their superior goal difference.

Kovsies’ rich vein of form saw them score 74 goals in 24 matches.

The two matches against Kingston and Celtic are formalities for a guard of honour for Kovsies. If the new champions win or draw both fixtures against Kingston and Celtic, the result will still see them finish 2015-’16 in style.

By winning the Mangaung Safa Regional League, the UFS lads have qualified for the Free State promotion play-offs to decide two clubs to be promoted to the se-cond-tier division, ABC Motsepe League.

The promotion play-offs will be staged in Bethlehem in May. Five clubs from five Safa regions in the Free State will compete for the two available spots in the ABC Motsepe League.
