PRACTICAL approaches to and prevention of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) are expected to be closely scrutinised during the fourth FASD conference in Kimberley on Tuesday, 16 February.

Interested candidates are invited to this event hosted by Rotary Kimberley South District and Hope in South Africa at the Horseshoe Motel in Kimberley.

This conference brings together experts, professionals and other interested individuals of a range of government and non-government organisations to share research and practical experiences in the field of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

The conference provides a stimulating environment where delegates can learn from one another, forge new partnerships and develop better strategies to prevent FASD.

The first FASD conference was held in De Aar in 2013, the second in Colesburg in 2014, and the third in Kimberley in 2015.

Dorothy-Anne Howitson, Rotary public relations officer, said that the nominal conference fee of R200 would cover morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea.

On the day, Northern Cape premier, Sylvia Lucas, is expected to deliver the keynote address, while the opening address will be given by Rotary district governor, Tom McGee.

Howitson added that amongst the items on the programme would be a presentation of progress made on the project to develop a sports-based education and prevention curriculum to teach young people about the morbid effects of alcohol on their unborn child.

A team of clinical psychologists will present their community project on FASD prevention.

“The Department of Health will present on the impact of the MomConnect project, and there will be a question and answer session with an expert panel,” said Howitson.

The conference will take place from 09:00 to 16:00 with a limitation of 300 participants. Register at www.rotarykimberleysouth.club/fasd-conference-2016.
