THE South African Mathematics Foundation’s (SAMF) annual awards function took place on Saturday (24/09) at the Kopanong Conference Centre in Benoni.

During this ceremony, prizes were awarded in the two premier mathematics competions: the South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO) for high school learners and the South African Mathematics Challenge (SAMC) for primary school learners.

Nicholas Kroon and Aaron Naidu received gold awards as the top performers.

Liberty and the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), the sponsors, presented the achievers’ awards.

Nicholas, a gr. 12 learner of the St Andrew’s College in Grahamstown, has been a medallist since 2012 and also represented South Africa at the International Mathematics Olympiad in 2015 and 2016.

Aaron came out tops in the junior division with the gold Dawie du Toit medal for the second year in a row. Aaron is a gr. 9 learner at Eden College, Durban.

Another flagship project of SAMF is SAMC for gr. 4 to gr. 7 learners. The top performing school this year was the Sweet Valley Primary School in Cape Town.

Other schools which were awarded prizes included the Somcuba Primary School in Nelspruit, Zwelihle Primary School in Hermanus, Nyanda Primary School in Pietermaritzburg, Amazibu Primary School in Amazimtoti, Laerskool Die Poort in Pretoria, Sweet Valley Primary and the Roedean School in Johannesburg.

Schools who would like to qualify for next year’s edition of the awards, can keep an eye on www.samf.ac.za for information.
