More can be done to safeguard the community, the especially children, against assaults, sexual crimes, rapes and murders that have been engulfing the country.

This was highlighted by Mosiuoa Lekota, the president and leader of the Congress of the People (Cope), when he led a community march to the Roodepan police station on 16 June.

The march, under the theme “Protect our children, SAPS”, saw the handover of a memorandum to local police commander Supt. Kapok van Staden, where Lekota acknowledged the positive role that the police play.

It was attended by members of churches, schools, crèches and the community.

According to Chris Liebenberg, Cope’s provincial secretary, Lekota continued to urge the community to stand together against corruption when he addressed them at the Roodepan Library Hall later in the day.

”We need to unite in the fight of safeguard our children,” Lekota said.
