Life sentence after rape and murder

2016-07-06 06:00

SENEKAL. X Botsane Caswell Motebang (29) from Senekal was recently sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder and rape of a 86-year-old granny.

The heavy sentence came after he had been found guilty of murder and rape by the Bloemfontein High Court.

Motebang was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and 12 years for rape.

Apparently, on 22 September 2014 at about 08:00, Tseleng Elizabeth Mtapane was found dead inside her home in Matwabeng near Senekal.

The deceased had visible strangle marks on her neck and semen was also found on her body.

During the investigation, Tshepo Frank Malane and Motebang, both aged 27, gave information about the wanted suspect to the investigating officer, Det. Sgt Mauries van Niekerk.

They said two days before the murder of the woman, at about 20:00, they had been walking in the street in Matwabeng.

They said they had heard a woman screaming and decided to go inside the house to find out what was the matter.

Inside the house they found Elias Mokhele with the old woman.

She told them that Mokhele had been trying to rape her.

However, she did not want to open a case.

They said they had then walked away and left the woman alone.

This led to the arrest of Mokhele and his blood samples were taken for DNA forensic analysis and for comparison to that found on the deceased.

During investigation the detective received incriminating information about his key witnesses.

He decided to take their blood samples for DNA analysis.

When the results came back, it turned out that one of his key witnesses, Motebang, was the wanted suspect, because his samples were linked positively to what was found on the deceased.
