THE Free State capital of Bloemfontein comes alive with the spectacular Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe), an occasion fit for celebration of Africa’s rich heritage.

The theme for this year’s edition is Igniting the African Spirit and marks the 19th edition of staging the event.

The festival starts on Friday (30/09) and ends on Sunday (09/10) with all events in the heart of Bloemfontein.

The ten day event is a good mix of live indoor and outdoor performances, showcasing art and craft as well as sport.

The event’s growing stature was further raised by South African legends. They include among others the late Simon “Mahlathini” Nkabinde, also known as the Lion of Soweto, Miriam “Mama Africa” Makebe and Reggae icon Lucky Dube.

The festival kicks off with a bang on Friday with home-grown hip-hop music event Tshepe versus New Age Squad at The Dome, Old Grey Sports Ground. Featured are Andrianto, J Cob, Naycha, Castino, Thwenny Thwenny, DJ Speedsta, 2nyce and Ricky Rick among others.

Sunday’s gospel concert, at 11:00, will see the new gospel sensation Dr Tumi Makweya, a qualified medical doctor, offering audience spiritual healing, performing live. Also billed to perform are Solly Mahlangu, Sello Malete, Siphokazi, Lesego, Rofhiwa, Deborah Frazer, Israel Mosehle, Morwesi and Teboho as well as Paul Lechalaba.

Tickets are available at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers. Visit for a full programme.
