Macufe offers Pan-African festival

Over 50 chart-toppers, along with exciting emerging performing acts, are set to light up the stage of the 19th annual Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe).

This year’s event is expected to provide spirited performances from 29 September to 7 October in the Free State capital of Bloemfontein.

The theme is “Macufe’s Proud Pan-African Cultural Affair”.

A flagship initiative of the Free State government, the event is driven by the provincial Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

It is proudly supported by the national Department of Arts and Culture, the National Lotteries Commission, the Mangaung Municipality and Free State Tourism.

“We are excited that the thousands of arts and entertainment fanatics travelling from around the country and continent to attend Macufe are going to be presented with yet another brilliant festival,” said Mathabo Leeto, MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

The show will get underway on 29 September with Tshepe, a Sotho hip-hop event.

It will take place at The Dome on the Old Grey’s sports grounds in Bloemfontein.

Performances at this show will mostly feature acts from the Free State.

These include Frog, Castino, Thwenny, Mc Fire, Tumi Tladi, Kot Inferno, Malumkoolkat, Gemini Major, Nasty C, as well as DJ Speedsta and DJ Shaxe.

The gospel event on 1 Oktober will welcome worship singer Dr Tumi, whose recent show at the Northgate Dome was sold out.

Joining Dr Tumi will be Bloemfontein’s talented blind singer Primrose.

Other acts in the line-up include Sello Malete, Neyi Zimu, Keorapetse, Teboho, Umsingizane, Thoko, Keke Phoofolo, Biki Mafabatho, Malibongwe Gqwabe, Helen, Tsusie Ntseto and Morwesi, as well as Sipho Ngwenya and Thina Zungu.

Macufe’s main jazz event, to be held on 7 October at the Rose Garden, Loch Logan, will includeis the inclusion of a stellar line-up of artists from a number of countries on the continent – making the festival a true Pan-African and culturally diverse affair.

Acts include the vocally powerful Benin Angelique Kidjo, Nigerian favourite Davido, Zimbabwean Jah Prayzah and Lesotho’s Bhudaza Mapefane, as well as Swaziland’s sensation Sands, popular for the song “Tigi Tigi”.

The South African contingent includes Afro-pop icon Mafikizolo, Ringo Madlingozi, Tsepo “The Village Pope” Tshola, Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse and Thaba Nchu lad Serame Sediti.

The line-up of kings of spin includes Semito, Prince KB with Busiswa, DJ Finzo, DJ What What and DJ Ruby Red.

An exclusive songstress occasion dubbed the Divas Concert on 6 October will showcase the award-winning Amanda Black, Thandiswa Mazwai, Angelique Kidjo and Nonkosi.

The Macufe Comedy Show on 5 October will leave many in stitches, taking a load of worries off many shoulders.

It will feature South African star comedian David Kau, Tumi Morake, Rasta, Tieho Khakhau, Donovan Goliath, Summary, Lihle Msimang, Thenjiwe Mosley, Salesman and Skhumba, as well as Elton Mduduzi Ntuli.
