A 20-MONTH-OLD baby boy escaped death during the brutal shooting of his father, Erick Vilakazi (46), by an unidentified gunman in Thabong, Welkom.

The infant is reportedly being treated at a local hospital in Bloemfontein.

The assailant reportedly shot and killed Vilakakzi in his house on Monday, 12 September, and injured the 20-month-old child, reportedly around 19:41.

Sgt Mamello Mokhuoane, Thabong Police Cluster spokesperson, said they were searching for the armed assailant who was on the run.

She said the deceased died on arrival at a local hospital in Welkom while his 20-month-old baby, who sustained severe injuries, was rushed to a hospital in Bloemfontein.

Mokhuoane said according to information received, the armed man, speaking Xhosa, approached the deceased’s 13-year-old son who was playing with friends close to the house, and enquired about Vilakazi’s whereabouts. She said the 13-year-old boy went to call his father and was followed by the suspect.

“Inside the house the boy informed his father that an unknown Xhosa man was looking for him. Vilakazi hesitantly walked out of his bedroom carrying his 20-months-old son in his arms. The suspect allegedly took out a firearm from underneath his tracksuit and shot Vilakazi. The suspect then fled the scene on foot,” said Mokhuoane.

She said the motive for the killing was unknown and that they were investiga-ting a case of murder.

The police appealed to anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts to contact the investigative officer, Det. Const. Klaas Mofukunyane on 072-611-4950 or the crime hotline on 08600-10111.
