BRIGHT matriculants from all over the country can now enter the 2016 Matriculant of the Year Competition, which offers prizes worth thousands of rands to the winner and the 24 other finalists.

This competition, held annually by Volksblad, parent newspaper of Express, and the University of the Free State (UFS), is open to all matriculants of 2016. The only requirement is that any matriculant who enters the competition must have the intention to study full-time at the UFS in 2017.

All schools have received entry forms, but achievers do not have to wait for their schools to nominate them to enter. They can nominate themselves, but the principal’s signature and the school stamp must be on the form. The competition closes on 30 July.

A total of 25 semi-finalists are selected from all the entries. Out of this, 14 finalists are chosen for the final round and theywill take part in a final tough selection programme to determine the winner.

The winner will receive an overseas trip for two donated by XL Astra Travel, the use of a Volkswagen up! for a year – valued at R60 000 – sponsored by Lindsay Saker, prize money of R10 000 from the sponsors Kovsie Alumni Trust, KPMG, Absa and Pick n Pay Hypermarket, a R12 000 bursary from the UFS and a weekend away and gifts worth up to R6 000.

The prizes for the 13 top finalists are prize money of R10 000 from the sponsors Kovsie Alumni Trust, KPMG, Absa and Pick n Pay Hypermarket, a bursary of R7 500 from the UFS and a weekend away and gifts valued at R6 000.

Each of the 11 semi-finalists will receive R3 000 prize money from the Kovsie Alumni Trust and a R3 500 bursary from the UFS.

Bursaries and prize money will be paid in 2017 as soon as the student registers at the UFS.

Information on how to enter can be found on the entry forms.

Contact Linda Greyling at the UFS on 051-401-3384 (during the morning) or send an email to greylinl@ufs.ac.za for any enquiries or for an entry form.
