Men sentenced years after rape

2017-03-08 06:02

The rapists of a young woman have finally been sentenced. The men had raped the victim almost six years ago when she was still a teenager.

The Botshabelo Regional Court sentenced Flep Mooi (24) and Sechaba Patrick Lekhula (27) to lengthy jail terms on Tuesday, 28 February, after finding them guilty of raping and robbing the victim in March 2011. The attackers had stolen her shoes, earrings and mobile phone.

The victim (21) was 15 at the time of the attack. The men had taken turns raping her in a shack dwelling erected on the premises of a church in L Section, Botshabelo.

Sgt Martin Xuma, police spokesperson, said the rapists were successfully prosecuted thanks to the use of DNA results which positively linked the two men to the crimes.

The court sentenced each man to 20 years for rape and one year for robbery.

Xuma said the rapists will remain in custody for the duration of the trial until sentencing.

He said the victim reported the incident after she had been let go by the perpetrators, apparently after intervention by a friend.

He said an eyewitness who saw the two perpetrators dragging the victim along had also helped with leads which led to the rapists’ arrest.

  • In another case, the court sentenced Moeketsi George Ramoeloa (24) of Thaba Nchu to life in prison after finding him guilty of raping a woman in October 2014.

The perpetrator reportedly raped the victim, then 15 years old, in full view of her minor siblings in the early morning hours after entering the house via a broken window in Ratlou.

Xuma said DNA results also positively linked Ramoeloa to the rape.

He said the victim and her siblings had been left alone by their mother on the day of the rape.

Xuma said the accused had been serving a prison term for house breaking and theft prior to being sentenced for rape.

The victim reported the incident after she was let go by the perpetrators, apparently after intervention by a friend.
