The newly-established John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) District Men’s Forum hosted its first march against gender-based violence in Kuruman on Thursday (31/08).

The forum was established because of the alarming increase in crime associated with gender-based violence, rape and murder, which affects vulnerable members of society, especially women, children and people with disabilities in the Northern Cape.

The group of men, joined by women, moved from the Absa Plain, up Livingstone Road with a motorcade, with messages on their posters expressing the theme of the day: “Not in my name”.

The men and women were taking a stand against the abuse of women and children.

Neo Masegela, mayor of the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality, pledged the support of the municipality to the forum.

“We, as the municipality, will work with the SAPS’s Men 4 Change and other stakeholders to eradicate this sickness,” said Masegela.

“We must take a stand against men abusing our women.”

These men also signed a pledged to support all initiatives against gender-based violence.
