BETHLEHEM. – A two-day communication and media workshop, organised by the District Communicators Forum and led by the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality, was held on Tuesday, 14 June, and Wednesday (15/06) at the Bethlehem Town Hall.

According to Matefu Mokoena, the communication manager at the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality and the chairperson of the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Forum, the aim of the workshop was capacity building of government and municipality communicators.

“We wanted to talk on how we can be effective in our work. There are always new trends in the community aspect in terms of government programmes. It is important to be updated and capacitated in terms of our work,” he said.

He said media personnel were invited on Wednesday.

The main aim was for them to understand how the municipalities operate and to discuss ways to better the relationship between the two sides.

“It was also an opportunity for us to get to know each other and everyone from the different media houses in the district,” he said.

Mokoena said one of the things that they have realised was that some of the local media houses were still struggling financially.

“We invited the Local Economic Development (LED) Department to make a presentation on how the community media can sustain themselves and the intervention that the municipalities can make. There was also some misunderstanding on how the municipalities work,” he said.

Mokoena said they were going to make sure they keep the relationship going and they would look at the suggested method of meeting on a quarterly basis.

“A better relationship can strengthen us in future,” he said.
