Murderer gets 20 years

2016-04-13 06:00

THE Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lt. Gen. Peter Shivuri, has welcomed the lengthy jail term handed to Night Kome (38) who received an effective 20-year jail term for murder and kidnapping on Friday, 1 April, in the Northern Cape High Court.

Kome was sentenced for the murder, kidnapping and rape of Olebogile Kaogase (19) of Tsineng in Kuruman on 5 July 2015. According to a statement from Lt. Olebogeng Tawana, on the day of the crime, Kaogase was walking home from the bus stop and Kome forcefully dragged her into a house at a nearby farm, where he was an employee. “After dragging her into a farm house he raped and murdered her with an axe,” read the statement.

He dug a shallow grave and buried her, but was arrested on 6 July 2015 after an intelligence-driven investigation.

After the arrest, he led the police to the shallow grave where he had buried Olebogile’s body. The provincial commissioner commends the community for working together with the police during the investigation. Gen. Shivuri in the same breath applauded the investigating officer for ensuring that the accused received a hefty sentence. “The sentence will serve as a deterrent and also sends a strong message to the criminals in our society. Criminals do not have a place in our community,” he said.
