Officers attacked in police station

2017-02-22 06:02

Two male police constables narrowly escaped death after being attacked by three armed men at the Sonskyn satellite police station in Bloemspruit, Bloemfontein.

The two police constables were reportedly ambushed recently while they were on duty during the night.

Brig. Motantsi Makhele, provincial police spokesperson, said the three armed men, with their faces covered in balaclavas, had entered the police station.

Without uttering a word, they opened fire on the two police members.

He said the assailants had shot one police member three times during the vicious attack.

The injured police member survived and was reportedly recovering after being treated at a local hospital in Bloemfontein.

Makhele said although the two police members had returned fire during the attack, they were overpowered and disarmed by the suspects.

The suspects also fled the scene with a police member’s vehicle upon disarming them.

He said the vehicle had later been discovered abandoned in the vicinity, with blood inside.

“It is an indication that one of the suspects was injured in the crossfire,” he said.

According to Makhele, the motive for the brutal attack by the assailants was to steal firearms at the satellite station.
