Principal faces allegations

2016-06-08 06:00

FOLLOWING allegations of fraud and corruption against the school principal, the Mmusapelo Intermediate School in Botshabelo is under investigation by the Free State Department of Education and the Hawks, South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI).

Sources within the School Governing Body (SGB) said the school principal, Pule Mokotjo, had failed to account for funds injected into the school coffers for various projects.

Some of the alleged unaccounted monies include R200 000 for school nutrition and a R98 000 grant by the Lottery for building a multi-purpose sports facility.

Howard Ndaba, spokesperson of the Department of Education in the Free State, confirmed that both the department and the Hawks were investigating Mokotjo regarding monies unaccounted for.

Mokotjo allegedly refused to avail financial statements to the SGB for scrutiny following the school’s nutrition scheme abruptly being halted in March 2015 – leaving several learners on the scheme in desperation.

Mokotjo, not suspended, is allegedly also accused of leasing out the school’s caretaker housing to a local businessman for R500 a month, which is apparently collected by him.

It is also alleged that he employed a teacher without the knowledge of the department.

Ndaba said the department was also investigating the school’s finance committee.
