Public invited to submit ideas for Macufe

2017-04-26 06:01

The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation invites the public to submit ideas and concepts regarding this year’s Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe).

The call for submissions is part of celebrating the festival, which this year marks 20 years of staging it in the Free State capital.

Written submissions can be handed in at any public library in the Free State and via the department’s official social media sites on Facebook and Twitter (@fssacr). The deadline for submission is Friday (28/04).

Tankiso Zola, spokesperson for the department, said ideas, concepts and recommendations should be on how to best celebrate this musical and cultural celebration.

“The department seeks to involve the public in its conceptualisation and staging of the event, thus incorporating a variety of ideas and concepts. The department has already started with consultations with different stakeholders as to how we can celebrate the 20th anniversary of Macufe in the best way,” said Zola.

Zola said the Macufe show has distinguished itself from most popular festivals in South Africa, which are focused on Eurocentric culture, paying scant regard to indigenous African culture.

Zola said the Centre for Development Support at the University of the Free State conducted a study into the socio-economic impact of Macufe and showed that it remains an important aspect in boosting the local economy.

According to the study conducted in 2015, the ten-day festival generated approximately R91 million in visitors’ expenditure in Bloemfontein.

“When spending by locals is included, the amount increases,” said Zola.

He said the study revealed the festival attracts approximately 18 000 visitors from outside Bloemfontein. The event is staged annually in October.
