Wake up and show up!

Sometimes a person reaches a lowpoint in his or her life.

When you wake up, nothing excites you. You have no plans to go to work or to school. You only see gloom.

Then criminal thoughts come into your mind.

How can I beat the system?

I am told that some people intentionally infect themselves so they can get a grant. Some steal. Others just wait and wait without any plan.

Maybe I am talking from a position of privilege. Sometimes you do not understand what others are going through, because you have not been through the same challenges.

I can sympathise, but not empathise.

But an idle mind is the devil’s playground!

I cannot sit still. I always joke that I have undiagnosed Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

I have been depressed and I know how despondent one becomes when one is depressed.

However, if I sit still and do nothing, I fall asleep. I believe that there is always something you can do.

I like to walk, write and read. And there is always a crisis I have to attend to. I believe assisting people gives you a purpose in life. It helps you not to concentrate on your own problems.

The other day, my cousin told me that he does not have money for food.

I asked him what he is doing to earn a living. He told me that he has applied for a grant. He is not thinking of anything he can do with his hands or his mind to earn a living.

People are recycling plastic, glass, metal and paper. I know it does not pay a lot of money, but at least they are able to buy bread.

Even those begging on streetcorners are better than those staying at home and expecting others to give them food.

I regularly ask people why they do not get a hobby to keep themselves busy. Look for new things to do.

Why do you not go and volunteer?

At least you will have something to wake up to.

Staying at home all day, not doing anything constructive, makes you feel unworthy. It takes away your dignity and pride. You are not contributing anything to society – not even to yourself.

I understand the scarcity of employment, but people from outside this country arrive here without any money. The next thing they are hiring us. We are always waiting for someone to hire us. We are not thinking how we can use our skills, qualifications or experience to bring bread to the table.

I have never been unemployed. I used to sell all sorts of things to augment my salary.

Maybe I am unfair and I do not understand all the challenges, but I think you must at least wake up and show up!
