The national winner of the 2016 Spelling Bee competition, Mayuri Mika Govender from Kimberley, accompanied the MEC for Education, Martha Bartlett, and her entourage on a tour to three local schools on the day of the reopening of schools.

Her role was to motivate her peers in primary schools to adopt the culture of reading.

“I am here to encourage, motivate and inspire you to start reading.

“I would like to request the teachers and principals to conti-nue encouraging reading because reading opens up a whole new world for you.

“You can go anywhere in the world through just the turn of a page and a little imagination,” she said at the Progress Primary School in Olville.

“My name is Mayuri Mika Govender. I am nine years old and this year I will be in gr. 7.

“I am the reigning national spelling bee champion and am also the youngest to ever win a spelling bee in the country.

“This year I will also be representing South Africa in the Africa Spelling Bee competition which will be held in Ethiopia.

“I challenge you to keep the trophy in the Northern Cape.

“Let us show the country that the Northern Cape has polished sparkling diamonds, and let us make the Northern Cape proud and successful,” she said.
