TO enhance and produce research of the highest quality, the Bloemfontein-based clinical research organisation IATROS International, has opened a fully-fledged facility in Brandwag.

This is another significant achievement in the organisation’s chief objective of becoming a major role player in research.

The new facility that officially opened in April, will have all its staff woking under one roof, thus ensuring that quality service reaches a wider range of clients.

The increase in clientele had led to a greater demand for services which had necessitated a bigger work space that is conducive to productivity and for this reason the new facilty had been established.

The run-up to this development started years ago.

“We started humbly with one part-time physician and study co-ordinator in one small study,” said Dr Nyda Fourie, operational manager of IATROS International Research.

She said the research organisation has grown during the eight years with the staff members also increasing.

Fourie said they currently have a full-time staff consisting of two physicians, three study co-ordinators, a pharmacist, a laboratory technician, an administrative officer and three recruitment officers.

Physicians not officially involved, are contracted when needed. This contributes to the variety of therapeutic areas that studies are being conducted in.

Their highest priority is patient care and well-being within the milieu of high-quality research.

For them, it is also important to be part of high-quality international research that is of benefit to patients, the local community and the country.

“Contributing to the market for new medication and making a difference to the health of patients are extremely rewarding,” said Fourie.

She said the organisation was owned, managed and supported by a number of physicians that included about 12 specialist physicians, mainly in private practice.

Fields of interest include, amongst others, cardiology, diabetic foot, gastro-intestinal diseases, haematology and infective diseases, including HIV/Aids.
