The discovery of a safe with four hunting rifles, a shot gun and 350 rounds of ammunition for different calibres of firearms by police, has led to the urgent request for information.

The discovery was made by the Kuruman police in a veld near Hotazel on Wednesday (25/07) at approximately 16:00 after which an intensive search for suspects was launched by the Northern Cape Trio Crimes Task team.

No arrest has yet been made with regard to the case.

According to a statement by Capt. Olebogeng Tawana, the safe was spotted by community members who were collecting firewood, who then alerted the police.

The ammunition found are 100 rounds for a .38 special revolver, 50 rounds for a R5 rifle, 18 round for a 308 rifle and 89 rounds for a 2.2 long rifle.

Tawana said preliminary investigation indicates that the safe, firearms, ammunition and jewellery are estimated to be worth thousands of rands.

These items were reportedly stolen during a burglary at a residence on 8 or 9 July.

The acting provincial commissioner of the Northern Cape, Maj.Gen. Henriëtte de Waal, has lauded the discovery and commended the community members for alerting the police.

“We request anyone with information that could assist us to bring to book those who were involved in the dumping of the safe, firearms and ammunition, to call Capt. Doggy Magugu of the Trio Crimes Task Team on 082-469-0578,” Tawana said.
