Safety a priority

THE Life-Rosepark Hospital and Shell Ultra City Pitstop Bloemfontein launched their annual road safety campaign on Friday, 11 December.

According to a press release, this year’s campaign, which is themed Stay Calm and Be safe, will run until 3 January next year.

The campaign is aimed at educating road users about safety on our roads during the festive season.

At the launch, the medical, traffic, police and emergency services, of both the public and private sectors, re-commited themselves to the safety of motorists during the festive season.

The Mangaung EMS Training College and Life-Rosepark Hospital paramedics held an interactive emergency rescue demonstration.

This interactive rescue demonstration involves the public – allowing them to participate in the rescue mission, using the “jaws of life” and other rescue equipment under the guidance and supervision of the EMS training team.

Motorists, who stop at the Shell Ultra City Pitstop en-route to their holiday destination, can look forward to receiving a promotional goody bag.

The three primary objectives of the campaign is to:

  • Create awareness among motorists and travellers through our region of the health, emergency and security services present in our province and what their day-to-day tasks include.
  • Create a fun, visible and interactive platform to relate with motorists and travellers, through demonstrations and promotional activities, reminding them to travel safe, keep healthy and remember emergency numbers.
  • Acknowledge the hard work, commitment and dedication of our public and private emergency, medical and security services – especially during the festive season.

The Free State road safety campaign has been presented to emergency services and holiday goers for the past 15 years.

The project was started in 2000 and since 2007 has been hosted annually and presented by the Life-Rosepark Hospital and Shell Ultra City Pitstop.

What makes the campaign so unique is that it brings together all private and public health, emergency and security services from the Free State in one arena.

It also creates a platform for them to unify and to be each other’s eyes, hands and ears during the very busy festive season.

According to Hannika Struwig, marketing and communications manager of the Life-Rosepark Hospital, the hospital’s emergency team and emergency colleagues will be on duty 24/7 during the festive season.

They will be patrolling the N1, N3 and N6 highways on a full-time basis and still be in contact with other services on the different routes.

“All the services will be able to communicate with each other, while covering a wider stretch of roads, ensuring that there is fast traffic and medical assistance in case of an emergency or at the scene of an accident.”

She added that “the majority of travellers through the region are on their way to the Eastern Cape or Western Cape for their holidays”.

The Life Healthcare group has 11 hospitals and emergency units in the Free State (Bloemfontein), Eastern Cape (Queenstown, East London and Port Elizabeth) and Western Cape (Knysna, Mossel Bay and Cape Town) that will assist holiday goers with any medical or accident-related emergencies.”

Struwig suggests that before one goes on holiday one should determine which hospitals and emergency services are on one’s route and save paramedic or emergency numbers on one’s phone.
