School quarantined after 179 get sick

THE Bainsvlei Combined School in Bloemfontein has been quarantined after 179 learners had been treated for suspected food poisoning last week.

According to the spokesperson of the Department of Health, Mondli Mvambi, 10 of these pupils were rushed to the National Hospital, while 169 were treated on the hostel premises.

On Monday (14/03), Mvambi said all the learners were now stable and back at the school hostel.

Environmental health practitioners have taken over and quarantined the school hostel kitchen following the incident.

“The samples were taken and referred to the National Health Laboratory Services, including the water,” Mvambi said. The Department of Health is awaiting laboratory results to determine what might have caused the poisoning.

On Tuesday 8 March cases of food poisoning at the Aldam Resort in Bloemfontein were also reported, where about 87 workshop participants showed signs of stomach cramps and vomiting. Mvambi said these were treated on site, while a few more serious cases were taken to various public health facilities nearby. He explained that a probe by environmental health officials and laboratory testing of the food at the kitchen had shown that the poisoning could have been caused by the manner of food preparation and not by contaminated food.

Free State education spokesperson Howard Ndaba said the Departments of Health and education were working to stabilise the situation.
