Karel Maritz (40) was sentenced to 17 years imprisonment by the Upington Regional Court after being found guilty of raping a 61 year old woman of Donkerhoek in Kenhardt in 2016.

The crime was commited on 27 February 2016 at 03:00 when Maritz broke into the victim’s house and raped her. According to Capt. Francois Steenkamp of the Kakamas police station, the sentence was made possible by the meticulous investigation conducted by Sgt Sipho Tshabalala of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

Tshabalala was applauded by the unit commander, Capt. Henriette Myburgh, for a job well done. She emphasised that the sentence would send a strong message to perpetrators who think they can take advantage of women, especially older women, and children.
