Versatile pianist Grethe Nöthling will perform as a soloist with the Free State Symphony Orchestra (FSSO) in Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2 on 8 June.

The event will be in the Odeion at the University of the Free State (UFS) in Bloemfontein.

Alexander Fokkens will conduct the FSSO at this concert made possible by sponsorship of the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) and Standard Bank.

Grethe has been a soloist with major orchestras in the country between 1989 and 2005.

Performances include the Cape Town Philharmonic and the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic.

Nöthling started her musical career at the age of five and at the age of seven, she made her musical debut performing as soloist with the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra.

She has won several national music competitions, awards and bursaries, including the Sanlam Music Competition (1994), Absa National Music Competition (1998), ATKV Prelude Competition (2000), Hennie Joubert National Piano Competition (2000), Lionel Bowman Beethoven Competition (2001) and the Unisa Overseas Scholarship for Teachers (2003).

From 2001 to 2004, she completed a Bachelors of Music (cum laude) at the University of Pretoria under Ella Fourie and Joseph Stanford.

Tickets are available at Compu­ticket outlets (Checkers, Shoprite) at R150 for adults and R50 for children (6 to 18) and students with valid student cards.

UFS staff with valid cards and pensioners pay R100.
