MEMBERS of parliament of both the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces will continue with a debate of Pres. Jacob Zuma’s 2016 State of the Nation Address (Sona) on Wednesday (17/02). The debate, held in the National Assembly Chamber at 14:00, will end today.

Zuma delivered the Sona on Thursday (11/02), in which he focused mainly on the economy.

He conceded South Africa would not achieve its growth target of 5% per year by 2019 and acknowledged the risk of losing investment grade status from ratings agencies.

While many of South Africa’s state owned companies were performing well, Zuma also announced that those that were no longer relevant would be phased out.

He also announced austerity measures in the public sector, saying there was a need to curb spending in non-essential areas.

He said the issue of two capitals – Pretoria as administrative capital and Cape Town as the legislative capital – needed to be discussed as part of reducing administrative costs.

It was also announced government has established a state-owned pharmaceutical company, which would participate in the supply of anti-retroviral drugs to the Department of Health from the 2016-’17 financial year.

Zuma will reply to the debate on Thursday (18/02). – SANews
