Obed Lekhehle (17) has been chosen as the deserving winner of Express’ Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month for August.

He was nominated for his sporting achievements in long jump and high jump for the physically disabled.

Obed is a Gr. 11 learner at the Hendrik Potgieter Agricultural School in Reddersburg, located 70 km south of Bloemfontein.

Obed had his right leg amputated after being hit by a car in March 2008.

However, this unfortunate incident did not dampen his spirit or prevent him from performing on the sports field, thriving over perceived adversity. He made his disability category (T-42) for athletics.

This year Obed broke the South African u.18 high jump record at the Nedbank Championship for the Physically Disabled in Port Elizabeth and equalled the Africa record.

He proved he is a worthy champion achieving first place in long jump and qualifying for the World Para Athletics Championship in London during July.

Unfortunately Obed did not compete at the global competition due to an administrative mistake.

  • However, he is challenging himself to break the world record by 2019 in high jump and long jump. Send your SuperSport Let’s Play Sport Star of the Month nomination for September for your school learners aged from six to 18 today.

Nominations received before the 20th of each month will be included in that month’s selection.

You can email your nomination to supersport@zpr.co.za or fax it to 086-552-4922.
