FOURIESBURG. – The Free State Boxing Organisation (FSBO) has assembled the squad of 14 fighters that will represent the province at this year’s amateur South African National Boxing Organisation (Sanabo) Elite National Championship.

The team consists of 12 men and two women. The championship is set to take place in KwaZulu Natal in Durban from 29 June to 2 July. A venue is yet to be confirmed.

The Free State team was paraded at the Free State Boxing Championship held in the Mashaeng Community Hall near Fouriesburg on Saturday, 28 May.

Fusi Hlaswa, the secretary-general of the organisation, said they have selected a strong team of boxers. He said they had a team from the Free State High Performance Centre and the aim of hosting the championship in Fouriesburg was to build on what they had.

“I am happy with the level of commitment from the players. They knew that they had to work hard to be in the team and we told them that those who would not impress us, will be kicked out of the team,” he said.

He said they were very worried about the number of ladies who are in boxing. “We are only going with two ladies and we needed at least ten. We have to make sure that we recruit more ladies into boxing so that we don’t find ourselves in this situation next year,” he said.

Hlaswa said he would like to thank the Free State Department of Sport for the support. “I also want to thank the Dihlabeng Local Municipality. They have been with us for a long time and we appreciate their support,” Hlaswa concluded.
