RISING karate star Michael Davids (13) has been chosen as Express’s SuperSport Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month for July. He was chosen for his sterling performance in recent national and international karate competitions.

Michael was selected for the Free State Karate Team in February 2016.

In March he competed at the South African national karate championship in Durban, winning gold in his category.

This led to him being chosen for the South African team that featured at the Zone 5 Africa Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe, in May.

Michael did exceptionally well, winning a silver medal in his first international contest, against a Namibian opponent.

His form again saw him selected for the South African karate tour to the World Karate Federation Youth Games in Croatia in June.

Michael’s outstanding performance has earned him the recognition of being included in the South African team to compete at the Japan Karate Shoto Federation and tour to Scotland in September.

This gr. 7 learner at the Saint Andrew’s School for boys in Bloemfontein is an avid and active young sportsman.

He plays for the u.13 schoolboy hockey and rugby teams during the winter months and participates in cricket during the summer months.

However, it is karate that Michael loves, and currently excells at.

He started as a white belt under the training of sensei Quentin Rourke of the Shotokan Karate Dojo at the Northridge Mall and trains every week.

Through hard work and determination, Michael has consistently improved and he regularly participates in local and national competitions.

Michael was recently awarded his brown belt and encourages all young people to participate in this sport, which teaches the principles of discipline, respect and self-control.
