THE prestigious SuperSport Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year Awards for Express was held at the Windmill Casino on Friday (04/12).

At the event, Ruan Dippenaar (12) was announced as this year’s Sport Star of the Year, beating Riaan Dippenaar (9) and Sean Whitehead (18).

The second and third prizes went to Riaan and Sean, respectively.

Ruan had a fantastic year, winning over ten medals in various competitions.

He is involved in athletics, rugby, cricket as well as combat tang soo do martial arts.

At the combat tang soo do martial arts’ Free State Championship held at the University of the Free State (UFS) earlier this year, Ruan won two gold medals for weapons and forms and a silver medal for sparring.

Thereafter, he competed at the tournament of the martial arts and games committee of South Africa (Masa) held in Potchefstroom.

He obtained two gold medals for sparring and forms, and a silver medal for weapons.

During the South African Championship, he obtained two gold medals for forms and weapon, and a bronze medal for sparring.

Most recently he competed at the world championship held in Las Vegas in America, as part of the national developments team.

He received two gold medals for weapon and sparring and a silver medal for forms.

Ruan was also named the world champion for boys u.12 for weapons and sparring.

The guest speakers for the event were Torsten van Jaarsveld from the Toyota Cheetahs and Runaldi de Beer from SpecSavers who holds a diploma in sports vision.

Runaldi graduated in 2012 from the UFS with a B. Optometry degree.

In 2013 she received her diploma in sports vision from the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

Runaldi has been with SpecSavers Welkom since 2012.

The second guest speaker, Torsten van Jaarsveld from the Cheetahs, was captain of the 2014 Toyota Free State Cheetahs in the Currie Cup and this year represented Namibia in the Rugby World Cup.

SpecSavers came on board by sponsoring R100 off vouchers for sunglasses to all attendees and a R250 voucher for the runner-up.

The awards ceremony was a resounding success with 70 attendees.
