Start planning to

2017-05-17 06:00

A plan is a well-documented strategy that inspires intentional progress.

Without a plan, you are going nowhere.

You cannot go anywhere if you do not plan to arrive somewhere.

“When you fail to plan, then you plan to fail,” as Benjamin Franklin said.

Plans are road maps that take you to an established point of reference in life. If you do not have a plan, you are stumbling in the dark.

I have attended and facilitated many strategic planning sessions for corporate organisations.

This experience taught me that no matter how many of us sit in corporate boardrooms, developing strategic road maps based on a balanced scorecard, we still have not found the true notion to develop our own personal strategic plans.

No matter how impressive it may sound to align strategic plans to organisational goals, our personal lives still do not reflect the same ability to align our own goals.

We discuss corporate vision, mission, values and goals, yet we still battle to apply the same principles to our personal pursuits.

The same challenge lies within us to draft and document plans and articulate them in short-, medium- and long-term goals.

We join great organisations with superb visions, yet we do not even possess a personal vision for our lives.

Planning our lives in accordance with purpose, vision and potential is a resource that enables us to be realistic in taking steps to achieve our goals.

Understanding planning

Planning is a management principle in life that helps us to coordinate resources in a productive context in order to achieve an intended result.

  • Planning is an applied art and a practiced skill.
  • Planning organises people and resources.
  • Planning attracts resources for provision.
  • Planning gathers minds together.
  • Planning ensures the achievement of vision and goals.
  • Planning outlines expectations for performance.
  • Planning produces evidence of a disciplined mind.
  • Planning clarifies the destiny in stages.
  • Planning is proof that you are going somewhere.

Commit to planning

People who are committed to planning stop being dreamers and become achievers.

Commit yourself to planning your years, months and days.

People do not like to plan, because they avoid commitment that leads to on expectation performance.

Your success in life is directly related to the energy you invest in executing your plans.

Applying the principles of planning

  • Conceptualise your destiny.
  • Brainstorm and articulate your ideas.
  • Write and document your vision.
  • Prioritise your goals in order of importance.
  • Organise and align your goals.
  • Implement your plans in phases.
  • Monitor and evaluate your plans.
  • Review and celebrate your achievements.

Organise your mind

Your mind is the faculty of your life.

An organised mind produces an organised life.

Therefore, without plans, life produces anxiety and frustration.

Today we live in a modern and a highly civilized society with advanced mobile technology gadgets in our pockets and handbags – yet we do not even utilise our daily planners for our maximum benefit.

Start planning your life today and enjoy a productive life.
