A partnership between the South African Football Association (Safa) in the Tsantsabane Local Municipality and Kumba Iron Ore has recently been sealed, with the aim of one day producing a professional football player from this municipality.

The partnership was formed through the launch of a new youth football development initiative wherein Kumba Iron Ore invested R1,5 million.

This partnership is the result of the call by Dr Robin Petersen, the CEO of the Safa Development Agency (SDA), for partnerships with corporates in South Africa to achieve Safa’s commitment to Vision 2022.

Safa’s Vision 2022 seeks to build structures of football development in an effort to ensure that the country consistently produces winning national teams.

The core of this youth football development initiative involves the establishment of Safa Emerging Talent Centres (ETCs), which are the base of the Safa elite talent development pyramid.

The ETCs consist of 64 selected talented youths from u.13 to u.17, coached by Safa accredited coaches on the Safa national football playing philosophy on a weekly basis.

A part of this initiative, the SDA was established to raise funding for the implementation of this ambitious vision in various parts of the country.

In addition to funding by Kumba towards the programme, a technical and administrative capacity will be available at Safa’s Tsantsabane facility.

This commitment from Kumba is a significant one.

It will see the erection of structures of talent development and administrative capacity for the Local Football Association (LFA) and strives for achievement of the national objectives.

The mayor of Tsantsabane, Maria Daniels, expressed her appreciation towards their LFA structure for being chosen as beneficiaries of the football development programme.

“Our LFA has been looking for this kind of opportunity. We would like to thank SDA and Kumba for the opportunity given to our structures.

“We would like to assure them that we will provide all the necessary support to make this programme a success,” she said.

Kumba Iron Ore’s George Benjamin praised the partnership for creating educational and tourism opportunities that matter to the community while developing the youth’s talent.

“We are proud of our partnership with Safa and look forward to the positive impact this will have on the community.

“The role of football and sport will bring our community together and create positive competition in our environment,” Benjamin said.

Daniels pledged full support to the initiative and said it will not only benefit certain groups in the community, but the whole Tsantsabane community.

“I hope that in five years we will see our very own local Doctor Khumalo or Bafana Bafana star rising and that they will feel proud to represent us,” she said.
