Suspects in cop attack charged

2017-04-05 06:04

Three of the four armed men who allegedly attacked a Kagisanong police officer and his girlfriend at their residence in Rocklands have been apprehended.

They had fled upon allegedly attacking Const. Neo Mokhethi (32) and his girlfriend in the early hours of Tuesday, 14 March.

The accused are due to reappear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court after their first appearance in the Batho Magistrate’s Court.

Their case has been postponed for further investigation.

The accused are Lebohang Mokhethi (25), Lebohang Selemela (24) and a 17-year-old, who cannot be identified due to being underaged.

Col. Lepile Kakoli, Kagisanong police station commander, said the fourth suspect was still on the run.

He said the four attackers had approached the officer with one pointing a firearm at him.

“The ever-ready constable, working under crime prevention in Kagisanong, immediately drew his official firearm and started shooting in the direction of the suspects. They fled the scene without having an opportunity to fire one round,” says Kakoli.

The breakthrough followed the arrest of the first suspect, Mokhethi, on the morning of the attack.

Kakoli said a policeman on patrol spotted a suspicious man with a bullet wound in his left arm.

Upon questioning, it was discovered that the man, Mokhethi, was one of the four attackers of the constable and his partner. The suspect had presumably been wounded when the officer had opened fire.

He said further investigation had revealed that Mokhethi had pending cases against him and had been evading arrest.

Kakoli said Mokhethi was being sought in connection with a rape that had been committed in 2015, as well as armed robbery.

Further investigation led to the arrest of the accomplices Selemela and the 17-year-old.

Kakoli said the pair was arrested after the police had discovered a plasma screen, a laptop and four cellphones in their possession.

All three suspects are facing charges of the possession of stolen property and attacking a police officer.

Kakoli appeals to members of the public who have information about the fourth suspect to contact him or the Kagisanong station on 079-884-2717.
