Talent grown

2015-12-02 06:00

NETBALL SOUTH AFRICA is hosting a training camp for South Africa’s most talented young players at the Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool in Pretoria.

The four-day camp, which started on Monday (30/11) and ends on Friday (04/12), is aimed at unearthing new talent.

South Africa came fifth at the 2015 Netball World Cup and Netball South Africa is keen to continue its improvement across all its national teams and ensure a steady supply of world-class players are ready to enter the Proteas setup.

According to Christine du Preez, Netball South Africa’s director of selections, the team selected could potentially represent South Africa at the 2017 Youth Championships in Botswana.

“We are preparing ultimately for the 2017 Youth Championships, however, and the team selected still needs to qualify next year in July,” said Du Preez.

“The camp is educational and promotes drug-free sport. The girls train in the morning and play matches in the afternoon.”

Du Preez said the selection team would be looking for players who could potentially play in the Fast 5, Diamond Challenge and for the Proteas and one of the most important criteria would be discipline.

“We are looking for girls who have determination and who can adapt to different environments. Another reason we’re hosting the camp in Pretoria is that we want them to adjust to the hot weather conditions, because that’s what we can expect in Botswana.”
