Thousands in scholarships offered

2016-10-19 06:00

AN opportunity of a lifetime in the form of a scholarships await high school learners for the 2017 academic year.

The scholarship is offering R250 000 to cover school fees and other education expenses, among them sports tours, for high-school learners to be chosen as winners. In total, 50 scholarships of R5 000 each will be awarded to learners who will be selected.

The scholarship is made possible by financial service company DirectAxis as part of its Currie Cup sponsorship.

To stand a chance, the interested learners or their guardians must apply by going to www.yoursupportplayer.co.za and filling in the online application. The closing date is 7 November 2016. The successful applicants will be informed from 14 November onward.

The scholarships to cover expenses for the 2017 academic year will be paid to the schools that the chosen learner attends. “We sponsored the Currie Cup, because it’s the competition which gives players who may go on to become SuperRugby or even Springbok players a chance to show their potential. The scholarships are intended to do the same thing, giving learners, whether girls or boys, an opportunity to shine,” said Emanuel Cristaudo, chief executive officer of the sponsor.

The school scholarship programme was launched last Tuesday (11/10) at Tafelsig High School in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, where Springbok and Olympic medallist Seabelo Senatla, as ambassador, addressed the learners about the significance of seizing opportunities.

“Sports and education go hand in hand. That’s how I got my scholarship. Greatness is in you. You can be whatever you want to be, if you work hard at it and if you really believe you want to be that. It is a choice,” said Senatla.
