The prestigious SuperSport Let’s Play Sports Star of the Year awards for Bloemfontein and Eastern Free State newspapers were held on Friday (11/11) at the Windmill Casino Conference Centre in Bloemfontein.

First and second places were awarded for this publication’s three newspaper partners – Bloemnuus/news, Express Mangaung and Express Eastern Free State.

All the monthly winners received certificates, further rewarding their sterling individual performances in their chosen sporting codes.

The guest speakers were Raymond Rhule and William Small-Smith of the Toyota Cheetahs. Runaldi de Beer of Spec-Savers, who has a diploma in sports vision, was also a speaker.

Raymond and William both emphasised the importance of enjoying sport en building camaraderie while playing sport (especially at school) to work through disappointments and learn to work hard to succeed, stay humble and never give up.

Spec-Savers sponsored six pairs of sunglasses for the winners and runners-up. The awards ceremony was a resounding success, with over 70 attendees.

The coveted awards went to:

Express Mangaung:

  • First place:

Ellandri van Heerden (9).

She stands out head and shoulders above the rest of the winners of SuperSport’s Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month.

In three sporting codes, golf, swimming and tennis, she has proven she is a worthy competitor, winning prizes in all three codes.

Obtaining top positions in the three sporting codes also shows her versatility and that she has great potential to make it big in the future, with focus of course.

It is very rare that an athlete at her age comes top in events, considering she is still in the development stage, needing mentoring and her talent nurtured.

  • Ellandri’s achievements make her a rare breed of her generation. Second place:

Jeanéll Coetzee (17).

She has proven she has great potential and inner determination to succeed as an athlete with disabilities.

Her achievement to set a new South African record in the shot put and be a competitive discus thrower too, is testimony that she possesses remarkable talent.

She has gone beyond her physical disability, which in the eye of others would limit her in achieving success. Jeanéll has willpower to make her succeed even with all of the odds stacked against her.

  • Express Eastern Free State: First place:

Keean de Klerk (13).

  • He excels in four sporting codes: squash, hockey, rugby and karate. Obtaining top positions in the four sporting codes shows his versatility. Second place:

SG Delport (13).

He excelled in golf, cricket and rugby.
