Rapidly rising golf star Wilco Nienaber (17) celebrated adding another trophy to his cabinet this year when he won his eighth turn in the winner’s circle in the Sunshine Tour Junior Series.

The lanky Bloemfontein golfer fired off a final round five-under-par 67 to close out a one-shot victory on seven under 209 in the Sun International Africa Junior Open. The event was staged at the Fish River Sun Hotel and Country Club Resort recently.

Wilco has won three titles this year, including the latest. He won the Global Junior Golf Tour twice.

“It’s been an unbelievable season so far, but I’m seriously stoked with this win,” Wilco said.

He was part of the team of four top-ranked South African juniors that won this year’s Fellowship Cup against India at the Leopard Creek golf course in Mpumalanga. With him in the victorious team were Jayden Schaper (Ekurhuleni), Christo Lamprecht (Southern Cape) and Luke Mayo (KwaZulu-Natal). The South African team roared to a 26-6 victory over the Indian team.

Wilco, who is a learner at Grey College, made his debut in this competition.

“I’m thrilled that South Africa won, because that was our primary goal. But I have come away with so much more than a trophy. Coming into the squad as a new cap was daunting, but meeting the Indian players and the rest of our squad was awesome.”
