Two child rapists receive hefty sentences

2017-08-30 06:01

A 19 year old man from Section T in Botshabelo has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for raping a five year old child. The victim is a niece of the accused.

The Botshabelo Regional Court convicted and sentenced the accused recently for raping the minor at his parents’ home on 17 August.

Sgt Martin Xuma, spokesperson of the Botshabelo cluster, says the accused will serve 13 years behind bars due to the court suspending five years of the 18-year sentence.

He says the mother of the victim reported the incident after noticing that something was wrong with the child.

Xuma says findings at a local clinic confirmed that the child had been raped.

For the protection of the victim, who is still a minor, the accused’s identity cannot be revealed.

In another case, the Bloemfontein High Court sentenced a 42 year old man from the Tseki Village in Qwaqwa to life imprisonment for raping a five year old child last year.

The hefty sentence was passed during the seating of the court at the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Child Justice Centre.

The sentencing ended the one-year trial, which began this year in August when the accused was arrested following allegations of rape.

Sgt Mmako Mophiring, spokesperson of the Phuthaditjhaba cluster, says the accused remained in custody for the duration of the trial, which ended with sentencing on 1 August.

Mophiring says an investigation was undertaken to bring the accused to book after the minor made repeated allegations of rape.
