2017-06-14 06:03

The Bloemfontein High Court sentenced two young men to life imprisonment for robbing, assaulting and raping a 30 year old woman from Soutpan in 2011.

The court sentenced Ramasilo Petrus Mohapi (23) and Machesele Joseph Moloi (25) recently, ending the five-year trial and serving justice to the victim.

Const. Peter Kareli, Free State police spokesperson, said five suspects were arrested in connection with the incident.

However, three of the five suspects were released after they could not be linked to the case.

Kareli said the investigating team, led by Sgt Molebogeng Bosman of the Parkweg Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, apprehended the men in Virginia, Theunissen and Welkom.

Mohapi and Moloi were positively linked to the robbery and the rape of the woman.

They reportedly robbed her of her cellphone and took turns raping her at the back of a broken truck.

The incident took place in October 2011 at approximately 18:00.

The truck was parked near Soutpan.

Kareli said three other suspects reportedly took the cellphone from the victim’s 12 year old son, after which they chased him away. He said the in the event the men assaulted and dragged the woman to the back of the truck where they took turns in raping her.

Kareli said the victim and her son were heading to Soutpan when they got a lift from the accused on the R700.

He said the victim agreed that she be dropped off near the truck, as she felt she would be safe there, because people were present.

Upon being dropped at the scene, Kareli said a group of men approached the victim, started assaulting her and dragged her to the back of the truck where they took turns raping her.

He said the victim managed to escape and stopped a vehicle that took her to the Bayswater police station in Bloemfontein, where she reported the case.

The rape ordeal ended with the Bloemfontien High Court sentencing Mohapi and Moloi to life imprisonment.
