FRANCOIS VENTER has expressed his delight at being named the Toyota Cheetahs’ new captain.

The 24-year-old centre said he was happy and proud about his new role at the Free State franchise.

“It’s very exciting. I am really so happy. I think it comes with great responsibility,” Venter told Express.

“I am very proud of that, it’s an honour for me to be the captain of a big franchise like the Cheetahs. I will lead as an example to my fellow teammates and will represent the brand well,” he said.

Venter will be leading his side for the first time in an official match when the Cheetahs face the Argentine side Jaguares in the Super Rugby opener at Free State Stadium on Friday, 26 February. The match kicks off at 19:00.

“I am looking forward to the new Super Rugby season and will see how it goes.

“Hopefully it will be a great season for us as a team. I think I still have a lot to learn being a captain and managing the team. But I have a group of leaders behind me. A guy like Francois (Uys) will definitely give me a few pointers as to what to do where.

“I believe I was not chosen because I am a different guy, but I was chosen for who I am. I am going to do what I was doing before, trying to do my best and help the team do well this season,” said Venter, who has committed to the Bloemfontein side for the next two years.

Asked what he wanted to achieve as the new Cheetahs’ skipper, Venter said he wanted to see his franchise being sustainably successful.

“We want to try and win all our matches, home and away. It is not going to be an easy thing to achieve, but we will try our best to make our fans happy.

“We need to play more as a team and work for each other on the field. We must have one goal Z which is to improve on every match we play and start a family vibe again. My main goal is to see us winning matches and making the Cheetahs family proud,” Venter concluded.
